Keeping Your Dog Entertained at Home

During these unprecedented times, many of us may be working from home to the absolute joy of our furry children. However, dogs can get bored easily and need constant simulation. So how can we keep them entertained whilst still being productive? Here are some tips to help your dog beat the boredom.

Work Off That Energy

Often dogs are restless or bored at home which can transpire into destructive behaviour such as chewing (anything and everything!), whining or digging up the garden if outdoors. A simple solution is to burn off their excess energy by taking them for a quick walk in the mornings and evenings. Every dog’s exercise requirements will be different but a 20 minute walk daily can often be sufficient to keep them happy and settled for the rest of the day alone. Don’t forget to use a good collar or harness and lead to ensure they’re secure and comfortable during their walks. We love Ruffwear Harnesses and Leads!

If time allows, another option would be to let them socialise with other dogs in a nearby park, or simply playing fetch with their favourite outdoor toy. However, this is not recommended during times of social distancing but your dog will appreciate the fresh air either way. Here are some of our picks for outdoor toys.

Keep Them Busy

Whether or not you have the time to take your dog for a walk at the crack of dawn, it’s always great to give them options to keep them occupied at home. Don’t forget that dogs need variety too so try rotating toys and treats given to them on different days to change it up.

Kongs

A classic boredom buster to keep your dog entertained! The classic KONGs are simple to use just by stuffing them with peanut butter or dog treats to keep them busy.

Challenge Puzzles

Think your dog is more of a problem-solver? Let them have a go at some Treat Puzzles! with a range of different levels, the iQuties Treat Puzzle Toys or Nina Ottosson Smart Toys are interactive toys which provide mental stimulation. Simply hide their favourite treats or kibble in the hidden compartments and let them solve the puzzle.

Long Lasting Treats

Who doesn’t love treats? Sometimes your dog might just need a longer lasting treat to keep them busy and their bellies full. Depending on what type may suit their appetite, we have a huge range of long-lasting dog treats which will be sure to make them forget about being at home alone!

Comfort Is Key

Dogs love their homes but when they’re alone, it’s always important to keep them comfortable to feel calm and settled. Always ensure that they have access to fresh, clean drinking water and a somewhere they can comfortably lie down to take a nap or rest whilst awaiting your return home. Leaving on the TV or Radio can also be helpful so they aren’t surrounded in silence. Finally, a plush toy can make all the difference.

Every dog is different and will have different needs. Not every toy or treat will receive the same response from every pet – you know them best! It’s always important to monitor the behaviour of your dogs to ensure their behaviour is not unusual to normal or health related. With a little trial and error, effort and care; you can be sure you’ll be greeted at the end of the day with a happy, entertained pet.
