Festive Season Food Safety

Festive Season Food Safety

Christmas time is possibly one of the happiest and most indulgent time of the year for us humans! While you are celebrating, getting together with friends and family and enjoying delicious foods, it’s also important to be mindful of what you feed your pets.

It might be tempting for you or your guests to share some holiday treats with your furry friends, but each year an alarming number of pets are rushed to the emergency room during Christmas due to eating foods that are toxic to them.

Human foods are typically full of salt, sugar, spices and fat. All which can be very harmful to our pets.

To avoid an emergency trip to the ER this holiday season, here are some common Christmas foods to avoid sharing with your pet:

1. Christmas Ham and Roasts

Ham and other roast meats contain high levels of salt and fats that your pet is not used to ingesting. This can result in pancreatitis which can use vomiting, nausea and dehydration.

2. Cooked Bones

Cooked bones are brittle and are highly likely to splinter if ingested. This will cause injuries within your pet’s mouth or can also get lodged internally and cause damage to their throat, stomach or intestines.

3. Christmas Cakes and Puddings

Christmas cakes and puddings not only contain high amounts of sugar but are also likely to have sultanas and raisins which can cause illness and kidney failure in some pets.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol is extremely toxic to pets and because of their body size, even small amounts can be harmful. Take care to ensure that drinks are placed out of reach of your pets.

5. Chocolate and Candies

Aside from the high amounts of sugar and chocolate being harmful for dogs, candies can also contain Xylitol. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener most commonly found in sugar free treats. It can cause toxicity and is extremely harmful to dogs even in small amounts.

Why not try dog friendly chocolates instead?

6. Christmas Decorations

One of the joys of Christmas is all the decorations and presents! But be careful not to put any presents that can be harmful (like a box of chocolates!) in reach of your pet and ensure that all cords and decorations are also safely out of reach.

We understand that it’s going to be tough to say no to those cute furry faces this holiday season. So, to ensure your pets also get to join in the festivities, we recommend keeping some pet friendly treats handy for you and your guests to give your furry friend.
