Firework Safety For Pets

6 Fireworks Safety Tips For Pets

As we near the end of the year, the thought of a colourful and noisy fireworks display might sound like an exciting way to welcome the new year.

However, this time of the year can be very terrifying for our pets. The loud unpredictable sounds and flashing lights can cause them to panic and flee even from familiar locations and people.

Here are 6 things you can do this new year’s eve to keep your pets safe:

1. Keep Your Pets Inside

Even if you have a secure yard, enclosure or don’t expect fireworks in your area, the loud noises from your neighbours celebrating or spontaneous party poppers can startle your pet. When your pet is in panic mode, they might injure themselves trying to get away or in worst case scenario, manage to escape.

Keeping them inside not only blocks out a lot of the noise, but it’s also more comforting and adds another layer of security in case they panic and try to escape.

2. Create A Safe And Quiet Space

Find a quiet corner of the house without windows to create a safe space for your pet, place their bed, some comforting toys and turn on the TV or the radio to drown out the noise of the fireworks. If your pet is crate trained, cover their crate with a thick blanket to create a cosy den for them to retreat to if it all becomes too much.

3. Exercise And Enrichment

Provide your pet with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation during the day. Bring your dog for a big walk, play a game of fetch, and provide your cat with some active toys. Then at night provide them with a puzzle toy or long-lasting chew to distract them from the noise of the fireworks and celebration.

A bed with high sides like this one from La Doggie Vita can provide a comforting space for your dog.

4. Stay Home Or Find A Pet Sitter

If you know your pet will be anxious or if this is your pet’s first time experiencing fireworks, it might be a good idea to opt to stay home with your pet so that you can be present and comfort them. If this is not possible, consider getting a friend, family member or a pet sitter to stop by.

If you choose to bring your dog out with you, check their collar or harness for wear and tear to ensure it’s secure and that they can’t accidently slip out of it.

5. Check Your Pet’s Microchip Is Up To Date

Even if you plan for your pet to be secure, accidents can still happen when your pets feel stressed. Now is the time to ensure your pet’s microchip details are up to date so that you can be contacted if they happen to get lost.

6. Use Calming Aids

Consider using some calming aids to help reduce stress and anxiety during this time as well. PetO recommends:

If you find your pet is still struggling with fireworks, consider seeking advice from a vet or behaviourist.
