How to Fit a Dog Harness

Thinking of getting a new harness? Getting the right fit can make all the difference for walks and training to ensure your dog is comfortable and safe.

A harness is recommended for walking dogs as they offer more control and can aid with training. It is the best option for small dogs, such as chihuahuas, to prevent neck injuries which is possible in cases of using a leash on the collar.

When fitting your puppy, we recommend choosing a soft, minimal, adjustable harness. No doubt they will grow out of it soon! When they are fully grown, upgrade to a premium harness to suit your dog's lifestyle and needs.

Once you have chosen your ideal harness, it's time to fit your dog! Here are our best tips from Jackson, Manager at PetO Rockdale, and his fur baby greyhound Xena.

Measure your Mutt

Using a measuring tape, measure the circumference of your dog’s ribcage. Also, measure the widest part of their neck just above the shoulders. Use the measurements to find the recommended harness size for your dog. Some brands will have breed recommendations as well.

Keep it Loose

Once you have picked out a size, unclip and loosen ALL the straps. This will make it easier to slide over your dog’s head or step into.

If you have a unique shaped dog or a particular breed like a greyhound or bulldog, having a harness with multiple adjustable points for both neck and chest can give your dog a better fit.

The Ruffwear Front Range Harness has 4 adjustable points - 2 along the rib cage and 2 above the shoulders for a customised fit.

Check the Fit

Once you have loosened all the straps, the harness should be easy to put on your dog. Check that the harness is not too tight over their shoulders. It should fit under their collar.

Adjust the Straps

Start to tighten the straps but not too tight. You may need to adjust the other side to keep it even. You should be able to comfortably put 2-3 fingers under the straps. Too loose and your dog will be able to escape. Too tight and your dog will feel uncomfortable.

Adjust the Straps

The best test is to go for a quick stroll and see how the harness moves. The harness shouldn’t pull away too much from the lead and you dog should be happy to walk and not feel stiff.
