Protect Your Kitten From Parasites

While they are growing, your kitten’s immune system is still developing and not as resilient as an adult cat. So, it’s important to be proactive about your kitten’s parasite protection and to use appropriate products that are formulated for young cats.

We recommend to protect against flea, worm and ticks.

Check your kitten regularly for ticks or other parasites. Even if your cat does not go outdoors as parasites can easily be transmitted from other pets, people or even through native animals!

Tips on How to Protect Your Kitten From Parasites

  • Ticks love to hide in dark and moist places. So, when checking, pay extra attention to the ears, inside the mouth along the gum area, between the toes, under the collar (if your kitten wears one), along the eyes and inside the arm pit areas and genital/bum area.
  • If you find a tick and don’t have a tick remover, it’s best to bring your kitten to the vet to have it professionally removed. This is also a good chance for your vet to thoroughly check your kitten to ensure there are no other ticks on their body.
  • To check for fleas, push your kitten’s fur against the grain until you see skin. Check for any red bumps or inflammation. If your kitten has fleas, you may also notice them crawling across their skin or jumping out.
  • Intestinal worms can often be passed on to kittens by their mother. They can’t be seen by the human eye but can be life threatening and cause your kitten to lose weight, appear sluggish and have diarrhoea.

  • Heartworm is transmitted through mosquitos and can also be fatal if not prevented or left untreated. Signs include intermittent vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, and difficulty breathing. If you notice any of these symptoms, bring your kitten to the vet for treatment immediately.

Remember, even if your kitten spends most of their times indoors, ticks and fleas can still be transmitted through your clothing or other pets. The cost of prevention is much cheaper and gentler than an emergency trip to the vet.
