Choosing The Right Food For Your Kitten
Diet plays an important part in your kitten’s ability to grow, learn and develop. Kitten foods are formulated with the right nutrients and proteins to support their growing bones (and bodies!) so it’s a good idea to shop specifically for kitten food in their first year.
What to consider when choosing the best food for your kitten
Ingredients
Cats are obligate carnivores which means that they require meat in their diet. So, choose foods that contain real meat as the first ingredient to ensure they are getting a good quality protein as part of their daily diet.
Variety
Some cats can be fussy or get bored easily if they are fed the same thing day in and day out. You would be too if you had to eat the same thing each day! Keep mealtimes interesting for your kitten by mixing things up.
There are a wide variety of fresh, tinned and dry foods available and the best way to find out what your kitten prefers is to mix and match and try a few different types. Feeding a variety of foods also ensures that your kitten will get a balanced amount of nutrients.
Amount and Type
Kitten food has been formulated with the right dietary requirements for a growing cat. So, avoid feeding them adult cat food while they are still growing. To prevent your kitten from overeating or eating too quickly, feed them small amounts regularly throughout the day or put their meals into a puzzle toy. Ensure they also stay hydrated by having plenty of water available.
Observe and Review
Like humans, cats can develop allergies over time. By feeding them a variety of foods early, it can prevent future allergies. However, it’s important to keep an eye on your cat to see if there any changes to their weight, skin, stools, or moods. If you do introduce new food, do it slowly. Mix in a small amount to their existing food so that you can see if your cat has a reaction to any of the new ingredients.
Every cat is different and therefore what works well for one cat might not sit well with another. We encourage you to talk to your vet or come in store to speak with one of our expert team members who can help you find a the most suitable diet for your kitten.
